CONGRESSIONAL ACTION

Over the summer of 1998, Deborah Weatherly, (202) 225-3081, Staff Assistant on the Subcommittee on the Department of Interior, inserted language into the appropriation bill to cut all funding for routine maintenance of the Holt House, effective for that funding year.

What was extraordinary was that there had been no request, that year, for funds for the Holt House from either the Zoo or from anyone else. Since 1985, funds requested by the National Zoo for the Holt House had been misappropriated and spent on other projects.

Lobbying Congress is strictly regulated, the Smithsonian has refused to release its policy related what it can and cannot do to influence Congressional appropriations.
