Bilingualism Honored

Ten bilingual D.C. public high school seniors were awarded $5,000 college scholarships from the MCI International Scholar Awards Program this week.

The students, who speak two or more languages, were selected by a panel of community leaders based on their academic accomplishments, extra-curricular activities and essays.

The winners are: Kenneth Olumba, Phoenix Harris, Rhonda Henderson and Darnell Bennett, all of Benjamin Banneker Senior High School; Deysi Ramirez and Yanira Reyes, both of BellMulticultural High School; Silvia Tolentino, of Cardozo Senior High School; Jasmine Phillips, of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts; Chiao Liu, of School Without Walls; and Regina Van Horne, of Woodrow Wilson High School.

Student Wins $15,000

Ryan Richmond, a junior at Benjamin Banneker Senior High School, has been awarded a $15,000 Discover Card Tribute Award scholarship.

Richmond, one of six D.C. high school juniors to be awarded scholarships, was honored for his organization of intramural sports, pep rallies and a peer mediation project, and for his participation in a youth leadership seminar. He is also his school's student government association president.

The other students, who were given smaller awards, are: Karen Carvo, of Bell Multicultural Senior High School; Abeni Blount, of Woodrow Wilson Senior High School; Megan Donovan, of Dunbar Senior High School; Catherine Osborne, of Sidwell Friends School; and Tyese Wright, of the Model Secondary School for the Deaf.

The award, jointly sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators, is given to 430 students nationwide and abroad for accomplishments in leadership, overcoming obstacles, unique endeavors, special talents and community service.

Ronald Brown Remembered

A technical learning center at Roper Middle School was dedicated last week to the memory of the late Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown, who died in an airplane crash in Croatia in April.

Brown attended the opening ceremony for the center in February. It includes personal computers for students and teachers.
